How To Prepare For This Holiday Season

As we all know, this year has looked wildly different than any other before. As we approach the holiday season, it is important to think about how we can emotionally prepare for the changes that this year will bring.

 Each year, as the holidays come around, we hear people talking about their family traditions and experiences; some hold this time as joyous, while others may find it stressful. This year might challenge some of those typical emotions that we associate with the holidays, and may even leave some feeling more isolated than in previous years.

 Here are a few tips on how to mentally prepare for the holidays this year:

1.     Manage your expectations: It can be helpful to journal about what this time of year usually looks like and why you love it or dislike it. Then, take a moment to write out what you think this year might look like and how it may be different.

2.     Think of something new: Thinking of something new to add to your holiday tradition that fits in with this year’s guidelines can be a helpful way of preparing for the holiday season. For example, try to participate in a belated zoom “friendsgiving,” or send cards (or virtual cards!) to loved ones.

3.     Identify your needs: Identify what you need this holiday season and be open to asking for the support you need. Support can be anything from an extra day off from work or school, to speaking with a professional. Find 1-2 people who can be your holiday emotional supports! 

4.     Grounding techniques: Utilize grounding techniques to come back to yourself if you are feeling triggered by anything holiday related. Try to practice a grounding exercise by taking ten deep breaths and repeat a positive mantra with each breath. Inhale cool, calm thoughts, and exhale hot, upsetting thoughts. You can even pair the inhales and exhales with positive and negative memories from holidays in years past.

5.     Be creative: Tap into your creative side by finding one fun craft to do this holiday season; this many include knitting a hat for a friend, creating homemade cookies, or even making your own greeting cards. As a bonus, if you are feeling festive, you can even tie in holiday “colors” or “décor” to your creation.

If you find yourself running through these tasks and still feeling the difference this year, check in on your emotional wellbeing. Be open with friends and family about how you are feeling.
